History of Ramakrishna Math, Hyderabad

Prior to shifting of the Math complex to the present site in 1979, the institution was functioning on the Market Street, adjoining the Mahaboob College in Secunderabad in a much smaller building from 1973. That building was handed over to the Belur Math in 1974 by a private body called the Ramakrishna Math, Begumpet, which lies to the north of the present Rajiv Gandhi Airport of Hyderabad. That Math at Begumpet was built in 1922 by one Swami Yogeshwaranandaji, a disciple of Sri Ramachandra Datta who was a householder disciple of Sri Ramakrishna. On the demise of that Swamiji, a disciple of his carried on the work till 1932. When he, too, passed away, the conduct of the Math activities was entrusted to a Managing Committee of devotees and admirers who were prominent citizens of the twin cities. It had several successive Presidents and Secretaries.
The Ramakrishna Math at Begumpet and the Ramakrishna -Vivekaranda Samiti on the Market Street, Secunderabad, run by another group of devotees, were amalgamated into one institution at the instance of the late Swami Yatiswaranandaji Maharaj, who had visited Hyderabad earlier and stayed in the Begumpet Math. He has left behind a number of disciples in the twin cities. It was, therefore, easy to get one institution affiliated to the Belur Math. For about forty years, the Managing Committee was frequently requesting the Belur Math Trustees to have this institution taken under its protective wings. The years rolled on without success. Every thing bides its own time! So, the time had arrived in 1973 to have this Hyderabad Centre affiliated to Belur Math. Certain legal formalities took about a year.
In the meanwhile, the Market Street building was restructured to make it suitable for housing the affiliated Ramakrishna Math with some of its activities, which went on until 1979. By then the Monastic Quarters on the present site was ready to be occupied. It look another two years to complete the construction of all the buildings in the Math complex, except the unit comprising the Book Sales Section, the Math Office, and the Ramakrishna Darshanam on the first floor, which came into existence much later. The present site, with an area of eight acres is quite extensive. It was given to the Math on lease for 99 years by the Government of Andhra Pradesh.

Ravindra Bharathi

It's second home to the city's culturati, and possibly the most active cultural center this side of the Opera House. There's always something happening at Ravindra Bharathi - from recitals by local music schools to performances by groups from all over the country and the world, from breathtaking dance ballets to arangetrams by aspiring Bharatnatyam superstars. And if you're lucky, that unashamedly cacophonic but hugely popular Kishoreda music festival might be on again. With singers to give your tiny bathroom-singing ego a boost. The center is a thriving bed of local theater, with a regular supply of Telugu plays and some occasional Hindi ones. Not all of them are good, but at least there's activity - and there's the undying hope that one day we'll have a Prithvi on our hands. That'll be enough of the sarcastic comments, thank you. The auditorium is first choice for many theater groups coming in from out of town. That trio of brilliant Englishmen abridged Shakespeare's works here once, in a play that still warms the hearts of all those whose senses of humor are deadened by the likes of Bharat Dabholkar, who also brought his play Monkey Business here.Yes, the seats are arranged so that you can't see anything if you're stuck in the back rows, and yes, the loos are indeed horrible. But on the bright side, most of the events held here are open to the public, for free! The cramped mini-hall on the first floor is available for smaller events, and there's also a tiny auditorium for film screenings, sometimes used by the Children's Film Society. You can always count on SICA (the South Indian Cultural Association) for a couple of good performances every month. And if you can't bear to hear Kishoreda killed over and over again, head out to the canteen and try its famed dessicated samosas.

chilkur balaji temple

The Balaji Temple is located at Chilkur in the Hyderabad district. It is 33 Kms away from Mehedipatnam. Approximately 75,000 to 1,00,000 devotees visit in a week. Generally temple gets heavy rush on Fridays and Sundays.

The temple at Chilkur is managed by the hereditary trustee Sri M.V. Soundara Rajan and Sri C.S. Gopala Krishna. The entire family of the archaka, including the women are dedicated themselves to serve the God.

History:
Twenty Five kilometers from Hyderabad off the Vikarabad road and on the banks of Osmansagar is the picturesque village of Chikur with its hoary temple dedicated to Sri Balaji Venkateshwara. From the style, structure and appearance, it can be inferred that the temple was built half a millennium ago. Set in sylvan surroundings, the temple attracts thousands of pilgrims every year and is an ideal place for sequestered retreat and meditation. It enjoyed in the past, great days of pomp and glory.

The temple is one of the oldest in Telengana, having been built during the time of Akkanna and Madanna, the uncles of Bhakta Ramdas. According to tradition, a devotee who used to visit Tirupati every year could not do so on one occasion owing to serious ill-health. Lord Venkateshwara appeared in his dream and said, "I am right here in the jungle nearby. You don't have to worry." The devotee at once moved to the place indicated by the Lord in the dream and saw a mole- hill there, which he dug up. Accidentally, the axe struck Lord Balaji's idol covered by the mole-hill below the chin and on the chest, and surprisingly blood started flowing profusely from the "wounds", flooding the ground and turning it scarlet. The devotee could not believe his eyes when he saw this. Suddenly he could not believe his ears also when he heard a voice from the air which said,"Flood the mole-hill with cow's milk. "When the devotee did so, a Swayambhu idol of Lord Balaji accompanied by Sridevi and Bhoodevi(a rare combination) was found, and this idol was installed with the due rites and a temple built for it.

Sri Balaji venkateshwara, the Pratyaksha Daiva in kaliyuga, is thus available at Chilkur to shower blessings on His devotees who for any reason are unable to go to Tirupati. Many devout worshippers flock to the temple, to receive the blessings of the Lord and his consorts throughout the year particularly during the Poolangi, Annakota and Brahmothsavams

With the earnest desire to revive the former glory and importance of the temple, the idol of Ammavaru was installed in 1963 the year following the Chinese aggression, and when the aggression was unilaterally vacated, Ammavaru was given the name of Rajya Lakshmi, signifying this welcome event. The unique feature of this idol is that lotus flowers are held in three hands and the fourth hand is in such a position towards the lotus feet which signifies the doctrine of Saranagathi.

The temple has been visited by great Acharyas from time to time. A visit to the temple is a must for the Jeer of Sri Ahobila Mutt every time he visits the twin cities, and in the temple is installed the idol of the first Jeer. The Tilakayaths of Sri Vallabhacharya Sampradaya have been regularly visiting the shrine. Jagadguru Sri Sankaracharya of Sringeri Mutt and his disciple graced the efforts of the trustees in improving the temple.

Hyderabad and Secunderabad are the two cities that are connected to each other by the Hussain Sagar Lake. They are popularly known as twin cities.

The place where the Hussain Sagar Lake is located is called 'Tank Bund'. It is an abridged version of its actual area, and has attained lovely trimmings and environs that augment its appeal to tourists as well as the residents of the twin cities. The Lake doubles up as an important landmark as well as picnic and recreation spot. The Lake is bordered by four major spans of greenery, Indira Park in the east, Sanjeevaiah Park in the north, Lumbini Park in the south and a green belt stretch squeezed in between the Raj Bhavan road and the Necklace Road. Indira Park, named after former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is the oldest of these four parks and is also a favorite site among the residents of the city.

But the thing that lures people at the Hussain Sagar Lake is literally and symbolically is the massive Buddha statue that stands majestically in the middle of this placid lake. The 16 meter tall, 350-tonne monolithic gigantic sculpture rises high from the calm waters of the scenic Hussain Sagar Lake. The statue is entirely made of white granite, finely sculpted and stands grandly on a wide dais amidst the glistening waters of the lake. A boat ride to the statue of Buddha is an unforgettable one and gives a feeling of immense peace.

Every year, the state tourism board organizes water sports competition for all adventure seekers. The sports range from boating to water-skiing, para sailing and cruising in motorboats. During these competitions, a number of people flank the shores of the lake making it the most lively and colorful place.

Real estate demand in the suburban and rural areas surrounding Hyderabad has gone up exponentially leading to reckless increase in prices over the past few years.

The retail industry in Hyderabad is on the rise. Many international and national brands have set up retail chains here. The city has multiple CBDs (Central Business district) spread across the city. There are many major business/commercial districts from the older Charminar area to newer Kothaguda. For the advancement of infrastructure in the city, the government is building a skyscraper business district at Manchirevula, near Rajendranagar with a 450 m supertall structure APIIC Tower at its centre. Also, the Lanco Hills near Gachibowli presents the tallest structure in India for residential and commercial purposes.

Hyderabad Weather

Comprehensive, independent, accurate and up-to-date information on Weather, from the definitive guide to Hyderabad.

My favorite night spots (hey! not for dancing, but for eating ice-cream) during summer are Ohris at Banjara Hills and Famous Ice-Cream at Moazamjahi market. Both provide huge range of ice-cream flavors to choose from, my favorite is Custard apple flavor, yummy yummy...

Monsoon
The period of monsoon in Hyderabad is June to October. Plenty of rainfall and an accompanying high level of humidity marks the monsoon in Hyderabad. July has the maximum number of rainy days while September gets the maximum rain, there is a saying in Hyderabad "September month sitam-ka-mahina". This is my favorite season. I love eating "hot sweet-corn" with lemon-masala mix flavour during monsoon period.

Fish, prawns and crabs are my favorite dishes during monsoon season. My family doesn't make these dishes at home, so I try these dishes outside only.

Heavy rain affects Hyderabadi people in most of the areas, vehicles get jammed on roads everywhere. Brings normal life to a halt. Since last 2 monsoon seasons the mostly affected place was Tolichowki and its surrounding areas.

Winter
Winter in Hyderabad are from November to February. Winter season doesn't make the climate chilly like the northern part of India; it only offers a pleasant weather. During winter season nights are comparatively cool and pleasant. Average minimum temperature in winter is 13 degrees Celsius. The temperature may rise upto 28 degrees Celsius on some days in winter.

If you are planning to visit Hyderabad between November to February, it's wise to pack in a few light woolen clothes as well.

Hyderabad History during India Independence

End of Asaf Jahi Dynasty
On the 10th of July 1947, the 'Declaration of the Indian Independence' bill was introduced by Harold Macmillan. To the Nizam's dismay, no mention or decision was taken regarding the state of Hyderabad.

All princely states were given the option to either join India, Pakistan or remain independent. All states that would join the Indian Union would have to surrender their sovereignty and their right to collect taxes. All princely states large and small agreed to join the Union of India, except Hyderabad. In June 1947, the Nizam issued a Firman or a proclamation declaring independence from the Indian Union.

On the 15th of August 1947, India attained independence from the British, but Hyderabad stood defiant as an independent state. On 29th November 1947, the Nizam signed a 'standstill agreement' with the Indian Union for a period of one year.

In the months following the signing of the Standstill Agreement, suspicion and misgivings between the Nizam and the Indian government grew. Relations between the two were far from amicable.

The Razakar Movement, supported by the Majlis Ittehad-ul-Musalmeen, supporting Islamic supremacy in southern India gained ground in Hyderabad. Led by the zealous Kasim Razvi, the Razakars compelled the Nizam to maintain his independence and not relent to pressure from the Indian government. Claiming his right to remain independent in accordance with the Indian Independence Act, the Nizam declared Hyderabad a free, self-governing independent state but the Government of India refused to accept his point of view.

Sardar Vallabhai Patel, the deputy Prime Minister of India insisted that the state had to merge with the Indian union and to further tighten the noose, an economic blockade was imposed on Hyderabad. On the 10th of September 1948, the Nizam sent Nawab Moin Nawaz Jung to the Security Council to represent Hyderabad's case before the United Nations. This was the last straw. All channels of communication were severed and the Government of India contemplated military action against the defiant state.

On the 13th of September 1948, the Indian Army initiated its Police Action Against Hyderabad. The exercise was termed Operation Polo and for five days the Razakars and the Hyderabad army made a half hearted attempt to resist the Indian army. But their antiquated ammunition and ill equipped soldiers were no match to an entire armoured division of the mighty Indian army. A number of Razakars lost their lives in the battle and their feeble resistance was soon overcome.

Five days later, on the 18th of September, 1948, the Indian army entered Secunderabad Cantonment. Military rule was imposed.

A reluctant Hyderabad finally merged with the Union of India.

For a smooth transition and to placate the sentiments of the hurt Hyderabadis, the Government of India considered it prudent to appoint Osman Ali Khan as the Rajpramukh of Hyderabad state, a position that he held from 26th January 1950 to 31st October 1956.

Democracy had the whole world in its grip and how long could Hyderabad stay unaffected? The boundary of this region in the Deccan was redrawn on linguistic considerations. The Marathi speaking areas merged with Maharashtra, the Kannada speaking region with Karnataka and on 1st November 1956, the Telugu speaking areas along the region formerly known as Andhra formed the new state of Andhra Pradesh with Hyderabad as its capital.

Takht-e-Nishan (Royal Seat) in Durbar Hall of Chowmahalla Palace, Hyderabad

Mir Osman Ali Khan withdrew completely from public life and choose to lead a quiet, secluded life with his family. He had wisely formed a number of trusts that took care of his family's need and funded his various charitable institutions.

In 1967 Osman Ali Khan passed away and his eldest grandson, Mukarram Jah, became the new Nizam - a designation that had no meaning, no duties and no responsibilities any more.

In 1972, the Indian Prime Minister, Ms Indira Gahndhi abolished the 'privy purse' and monarchs and royal families lost all their privileges at one go. Prince Mukarram Jah migrated to Australia and while most of his estate is being managed by the trusts formed by his grandfather, some of it has been acquired by the government.
